Christianity is the largest religious group in the world, which dominates free and open societies that enjoy freedom of speech without fear of repercussion. The places where Christianity gets mocked and ridiculed are the same places where heads of state and leading politicians are freely mocked and ridiculed.
That does not mean Christians are oppressed. It just means that their societies are tolerant, like... Well, like exactly what the religion defends.
Just because we, in western countries, feel free to make jokes about religious groups that doesn't mean they are being oppressed.
- mansion7 6y agoOnly by 5%. This will soon be surpassed by Islam. One wonders if the "free and open societies that enjoy freedom of speech without fear of repercussion" will continue when the Christians in those areas are minoritized or depleted. Actually, one needn't wonder, one only need review a general survey of human rights in countries where it already dominates. As to your other point, It is not certain that it is mere tolerance. If Christians do not allow outsiders to come and diminish them, or they sanction those who do, they are called racist, xenophobic, etc. To a person or entity that knows itself NOT to be racist/bigoted, this is of the highest offense. It is preferable as a country to be called even communist, than racist. So in an effort to avoid being tarred racist/bigoted, they allow people who hate them and the societies they create to come in and undermine them. This leads to their status being chipped away at, until they are only nominally Christian, or outright atheistic (various countries in Europe), or superceded and replaced. See Merkel-ism, where one invites a million foreigners hostile to your country and way of life, thereby irrevocably altering the country in ways as yet to be imagined. As far as I can tell, Christianity is the only faith that is called upon to "diversify" and "enrich" itself in such a manner. This disparity in treatment is in itself oppression. I would posit that you may be viewing this situation from a position of privilege, where the consequences of such disparate treatment are not yet visited upon you. Or perhaps you believe Christians should not be allowed to have countries and spaces of their own, as other faiths do. But as a non-Christian who lives in a Christian area (and who is respectful of their beliefs and does not they to replace them with my own) it is quite apparent.
- burfog 6y agoIf you can't equally mock and ridicule every non-Christian religion (atheism included), then yes the Christians are being oppressed. That is the case pretty much everywhere. It's the case in the USA, in Saudi Arabia, in North Korea, in the UK, in Germany, in Iraq, in Canada, and in New Zealand.
- rumanator 6y ago> If you can't equally mock and ridicule every non-Christian religion (atheism included), then yes the Christians are being oppressed. Your assertion makes no sense at all. Just because some authoritarian religious groups oppress those who may criticize them or their religion, do you honestly believe your religion is being oppressed if anyone cracks a joke at it? That makes as much sense as claiming that your political party is oppressed by the press just because the Chinese and Russian regimes murder journalists.
- burfog 6y agoI don't count social media or the American workplace as "authoritarian religious groups". Try it. Make a few Twitter and Facebook accounts, not associated with each other by phone or email. Use some to abuse Christians, and use others to abuse Islam or Judaism. See which accounts get shut down. The same goes for the workplace. Get a job. (great examples: Procter & Gamble, Oberlin College, Sandia National Labs, etc.) Spout something negative about Christians and see that nothing happens. Spout something negative about Islam or Judaism, and see yourself fired in the blink of an eye.
