I made that decision in 2011 or so; still use the same thinkpad hardware, and it's still faster and better than the 2017 mbp I was issued by work. Even if it was a shittier experience (kubuntu is vastly better than osx in every pertinent way), I'd continue using the thinkpad for the trackpoint and keyboard.
