Are you rallying?
I perfectly understand why people aren’t rallying: it’s happening on the other side of the planet. What are we supposed to do?
- waihtis 6y agoMeanwhile, Europe was filled with BLM protests.
- genidoi 6y agoSystemic racism exists globally
- read_if_gay_ 6y agoBecause it was the hip thing to do.
- EForEndeavour 6y agoDoes the "hipness" of an idea that motivates legions of people to actively protest depend on the perceived average age and/or culture of said legions of people?
- dwaltrip 6y ago...Is your username using “gay” as an insult? I get it is “playful”, but a playful insult is still an insult. If so, I kindly encourage you to consider a new username. It is sad to see people slurred just based on who they are.
- read_if_gay_ 6y agoWell thanks for phrasing that so nicely. I know it's offensive to some people but it's also exactly my kind of stupid humor. It's been a bit of a moral conundrum for me, I don't want to be an asshole to people who haven't done anything, but I also don't want to self censor. Currently though, for any new accounts that I create, I prefer another username anyway, but for this one, inertia is winning.
- dwaltrip 6y agoThanks for the thoughtful reply, I really appreciate it! Cheers.
- mas3god 6y agoWhat a joke, people are protesting the shitty police in the US.
- asdff 6y agoBelieve it or not there are black people and racism in Europe as well.
- tobyhinloopen 6y agoYes because it impacted local people as well. Not as bad as in the US but it’s not like there are no racists here
- maxwell 6y agoStop buying products made in Communist China. Only give your money to workers in free countries. Start manufacturing something. Did our parents, grandparents, great grandparents throw up their hands, keep on buying products made in Nazi Germany, and pretend that it was still the gay '90s?
- EForEndeavour 6y agoOn the one hand, we need an anti-CCP boycott of similar scale as the anti-Nazi boycotts of 1933 onward: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1933_anti-Nazi_boycott https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1933_anti-Nazi_boycott On the other hand, those boycotts pushed German Nazis to counter-boycott Jewish businesses and double down on anti-Jewish propaganda, and as far as I can read, didn't meaningfully hamper the escalation of Nazism toward war. On the third hand, to do nothing is to side with the oppressor.
- bhaskara2 6y agoThis. Thank you, we underestimate what we can do with our money. We can collectively bring an expansionist power China to a halt if we systematically boycott them.
- franga2000 6y agoNo, we can't. Rather amusingly: if you stop buying Chinese electronics, how will you convince others to do the same? Ham radio? Even Fairphone weren't able to avoid China and their entire goal is to reduce human rights violations im their supply chain. We need to start forcing companies to move production back home and we need to pay the 3x increase in prices that comes with that without as much as a single complaint. As long as our main concern is price, companies will outsource to poorer countries, which inevitably leads to exploitation. We need governments to require full supply chain tracing, outlaw doing business with human rights violators and actually enforce all of that through regular inspections. If they find a single child worker in your supply chain, you have a month to stop doing business with them or pay 5% last year's revenue in fines. This is what we have politics for. If you live in a democratic country, that's something you can actually do! Your money, however, is meaningless.
