I works a surprising amount of the time!
- jemorya 6y agoI use this every single day on my locked-down work laptop. It fixes so many sites! I recommend it as often as I can, and I'm surprised that its use is not more widespread.
- jonpurdy 6y agoVery happy to have seen this! I like that Alisdair uses a sticky header on the page to verify that it works.
- BruiseLee 6y agoWow, thanks! I've been using "nuke anything" extension to manually remove this crap, but this solution looks much more convenient.
- Voliokis 6y agoThis is great, but to use it I need to sticky the bookmarks bar to the top of my screen when vertical space is already precious. Does anybody know something else that does the same thing without this issue?
- DreadY2K 6y agoFirefox has a bookmarks sidebar that pops up if you press Ctrl+B (or buried inside the hamburger menu, but Ctrl+B is the easiest way to access it). You can put the bookmark in there, and then only open the bookmarks menu when you want to access it.
- JadeNB 6y agoAt least in Safari, your favourite bookmarks are accessible by ⌘⌥#. I've got Kill Sticky Headers on ⌘⌥1, so it takes no screen space but is just a keypress (or three) away at any time.
- dahauns 6y agoVery nice! And for Nuke Overdrive mode, add a check for position: sticky, i.e. (function () { var elpos,i, elements = document.querySelectorAll('body *'); for (i = 0; i < elements.length; i++) { elpos = getComputedStyle(elements[i]).position; if (elpos === 'fixed' || elpos === 'sticky') { elements[i].parentNode.removeChild(elements[i]); } } } )();
- hombre_fatal 6y agoHere's that code written by someone who has used Javascript in the last 10 years: (function () { for (const node of document.querySelectorAll('body *')) { if (['fixed', 'sticky'].includes(getComputedStyle(node).position)) { node.style.display = 'none' // node.remove() } } })() I found tree mutation too aggressive in the first site I tested it on (the site's JS code expected the navbar to exist, so it just blew up with runtime errors). Simply changing the display property is sufficient.
- dahauns 6y agoAh, thanks, looks much better! Yeah, I just took the original and quick'n'dirty-added the second condition, all the while thinking "hmm..." - and quickly losing interest again. :) Regarding tree mutation - I have to admit, it gives me some petty satisfaction looking at the errors thinking "Where is your sticky NOW!"
- laksdjfkasljdf 6y agoSo, in the end, we wish gopher would have won the hypertext formats war(just made that up)? I can't live without firefox's reader mode, which is pretty much Gopher-for-html.
- dnr 6y agoI use this probably a hundred times a day :( It makes me so sad. I've considered writing an extension to kill them all by default, but I'm afraid I'll break some site in a way that really confuses me and end up wasting more time figuring out what happened than I save with the extension.
