Google's Plan to Disrupt the College Degree Is Absolute Genius
- Hnrobert42 6y agoBecause people are nothing more than cogs in Google’s wheel. Who needs a well rounded education when you can learn just enough to join the long line of drones.
- shaftway 6y agoYou could use the certificates to get in the door and use tuition assistance from the company to round yourself out. Google pays 2/3 for job-related coursework, 1/3 for personal improvement classes.
- server_bot 6y agoLooking at the certificates homepage [1], this seems like a great entry point into the tech industry for people that might otherwise be excluded - practical skills to perform a job, not a replacement for the theory and rigour of an expensive 4 year Computer Science or Computer Engineering education (but how many entry level tech jobs REALLY require that background anyway?). My name-brand-school Master's degree makes me want to resist this sort of thing to justify my own ego. But I've worked with great people who were self-taught, so if this credential helps motivated self-starters get thier foot in the door and launch a fulfilling career, I'm all for it! - cafard 6y agoReally? Is Google going to hire somebody with one of these certificates as quickly as someone with the degree from Stanford, CMU, etc.?
- shaftway 6y agoI was hired pretty quickly and easily with no degree. A degree from a prestigious four year college certainly doesn't hurt, but it's definitely not a requirement.
- markatto 6y agoI have worked at both Google and Facebook without any degree or certification. In my experience, these companies care a lot more about interview performance than formal credentials.
- rasz 6y agoSure, after a week of whiteboard interviews.
