Hydroxychloroquine also directly inhibits heme breakdown, a weak point in malaria parasites' blood digestion. Beyond its standard antiviral and immunomodulatory activity, it's thought that hydroxychloroquine protects red blood cells' heme molecules from having their iron ripped out by Covid.
