I hate analogies... but this is like the prison warden intentionally leaving the gates to the prison wide open, and then absolving themselves of all responsibility when the prisoners inevitably escape by saying, "well, the prisoners oughta have known not to escape". No, you knew what you were doing and what the consequences would be.
