The article says this style of railway is unique to Germany. I'd say it is also unique in Germany -- as far as I know, there is no other place that has it.

- sixothree 6y agoWell. There is this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hshgs3-oRQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hshgs3-oRQ
- hibbelig 6y agoOh yes, and this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pv8MTufKRQQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pv8MTufKRQQ It is less than 100km from Wuppertal...
- LargoLasskhyfv 6y agoAnd you can use it with the same ticket, because VRR. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verkehrsverbund_Rhein-Ruhr https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verkehrsverbund_Rhein-Ruhr
- m4rtink 6y agoAlso the Shonan Monorail, from Ofuna to Shonan-Enoshima to the south west from Tokyo. Full ride: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQbFTxpnGZY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQbFTxpnGZY Ride & walk through Enoshima: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFLpEvRvjZc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFLpEvRvjZc We rode it back in 2017 and it's really an interesting experience & as far as I can tell the only top rail monorail with tunnels. :) Also as mentioned already, this is not a tourist gimmick - while Enoshima is indeed very nice and a popular tourist destination - it is evident most of the people on board are locals using it for commuting and generally moving around. And it seems to be very good at it, running over an often steep ridge & over roads, it provides fast and convenient transportation without wasting space. Also due to using rubber wheels instead of the steel wheels the Schwebebahn uses it can (and does!) negotiate much steeper gradient present on the route. A+++, would ride again. ;-)
- mhd 6y agoDresden? Not sure how the monorails in Japan or in Memphis relate to the Wuppertal construction.
- 9nGQluzmnq3M 6y agoThere's nothing quite like the Schwebebahn, but there are a few other suspended monorails out there, also known as SAFEGE monorails after the French company that commercialized the technology. The largest is the Chiba Urban Monorail near Tokyo, which is actually a two-line network: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiba_Urban_Monorail https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiba_Urban_Monorail Pro tip: JR trains from Narita Airport to central Tokyo pass through Chiba station, so you can hop off and go for a suspended monorail ride!
- merlinscholz 6y agoThere's the H-Bahn at the campus of the technical university of Dortmund: https://youtu.be/ObuNVqBD9jA https://youtu.be/ObuNVqBD9jA More info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H-Bahn https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H-Bahn Also I just learned that the same model is being used at the Düsseldorf airport
