I blame the consumer because we all vote with our money. Sure, technical proficiency in mainstream users has probably fallen somewhat since the 80s, but people should care about the huge difference between buying a product for their computer, or merely renting access to a product. They should understand that they're giving up the choice to stay with a version that works for them and their computer, one that won't force them to upgrade hardware or other software to keep going.
