Would distilled or boiled water work the same?

  It basically is distilled water. Sometimes they add some fragrance. But it isn't the middle-class extravagance the scare quotes are intended to imply. And boiling in a pot or kettle wouldn't help - that would concentrate the minerals you don't want!
