- saagarjha 6y ago$100 can be an hour of a developer's salary here, or even less. The relative cost is quite large. (Oh, and guess who isn't making a developer's salary in Iran? Someone who is just starting out, or an open source developer, or someone who is currently unemployed…)
- hu3 6y agoExactly. Consulting jobs in London often pay $500+/day if you know what you're doing. $100 for half a week of work would be a lot. People who think otherwise live in a bubble.
- saagarjha 6y agoI think you're trying to agree with me, but I don't think I've made a point for you to agree with. At least, it's probably not yours.
- dec0dedab0de 6y agoBut if youre just starting out or only releasing your code for free, then you're not a "viable software business", which is what the article was complaining about.
- saagarjha 6y agoYou know who needs to get new customers (the next sentence in the paragraph you took the quote from)? People bootstrapping a software business.
- aaomidi 6y agoOr people who want to publish a software for free. It's surprising how many people have forgotten that software development and starting out new projects wasn't always for an endgoal of monetizing it.
- aaomidi 6y agoLiterally no one in Iran is paying $100/hr. I looked at your website you have linked on your bio as well. You've never even worked in Iran. Stop lying. Edit: this comment was a misunderstanding, ignore please.
- smnrchrds 6y ago1. As a part of US's sanctions against Iran, Apple does not do business with Iran, period. Neither does Google. That's why people install Cafe Bazaar (https://cafebazaar.ir/ https://cafebazaar.ir/), and alternative app store, on their Android phones the moment they get them—they cannot install apps from the official Play Store, nor can Iranian developers upload their apps there. The same is true of App Store of course, and there is little recourse there. 2. Your information regarding salary seems terribly outdated. There has been several sudden and dramatic losses of purchasing power and reduction in exchange rate for Iranian Rial, cumulatively by a factor of more than 7, during the past year. At the current exchange rate of ~220,000 IRR to 1 USD, the monthly salary of an Iranian developer would be around ~160 USD a month. Breaking the 100MM IRR/~454 USD barrier would be difficult for most developers. So even if the sanctions were lifted tomorrow, only large corporations would be willing to spend 100 USD at the current exchange rate, not independent developers. - aaomidi 6y agoMakes sense. Irancell pays around $350-450/month with today's exchange rate.
