I'd add that a huge factor behind their luxury good becoming mass market is the finance/payment plans that Apple and the cell carriers offer. I'm willing to bet the adoption of smartphones and regular upgrades wouldn't be happening at nearly this scale if all customers had to pay $600+ up front.
