Get personally involved, have some skin in the game, and you'll get much more out of music. About a year ago I started a project called Poseur to Composer. My goal is to play an instrument and learn enough music theory to compose songs I'm proud of (it's been a slow and humbling process, and I'm still working at it). Along the way I've discovered many new artists and genres, and I listen to music - no, engage with music - in a much different way now.
