Supposedly, at first, older people didn't take it seriously and didn't wear mask. Younger people did take it seriously, en encouraged their elders to wear masks. I've never heard of anybody deny germ theory. Germ theory is pretty well accepted even if they don't think all diseases are caused by germs. Many people trust traditional Chinese medicine a lot, but I wouldn't go as far as calling it distrust of western medicine.
