I've been treating the covid death count like GDP out of China. It's probably padded (e.g. you can count a death as "pneumonia" instead of covid), but it's probably not an order of magnitude off. The reality is that surveillance states and collectivist societies like South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, etc will have an advantage when it comes to coordination. China is very much one of these types of societies.
