Are you sure? iOS is something like half the US market and its userbase is likely more wealthy on average, I don't think any normal game developer could sacrifice that to keep using what is essentially an implementation detail at the end of the day, no matter how good it is.
- Aperocky 6y agohalf the US market but how much of gaming market? Personally I have always used macs but I have a windows desktop specific for gaming. I don't think anybody somewhat into gaming would have bought an apple machine for that purpose.
- themacguffinman 6y agoA cursory google search indicated that mobile gaming represents about 45% of the total games industry [1]. That's quite a lot, I'd say that the potential risk here is well into "unacceptable" territory. - Alphaeus 6y agoFor more serious/less casual games, they generally primarily target computers and consoles than mobile devices. I believe Unreal is more popular for these types of games (whereas Unity and others are more favoured for mobile games). If you are not targetting mobile, Apple has far less representation.
- strbean 6y agoHow many kids with iPhones will now insist that their next phone be Android so they can play Forkknife? This could genuinely make a dent in the iPhone's market share long term. edit: Count on the irrational fanbois to deliver drive-by downvotes!
- nxc18 6y agoYou’re getting downvoted because those kids with iPhones talk to kids with google phones and would know that Fortnight isn’t available there either, because Epic is also starting shit with Google simultaneously. Edit: also it’s in bad taste to discuss downvotes on HN
- cma 6y agoEpic can return to selling off-store on Android though.
- strbean 6y agoSee cma's comment. In fact, they already are doing this. Google "Fortnite Android" and you get a page directing you to http://fortnite.com/android http://fortnite.com/android and get the APK. So that doesn't sound like a legitimate reason. And if it was, the intellectually honest thing to do would be to reply pointing that out. That would allow them to be corrected.
