Companies being honest about what a job will be like is so critical. I recently had a company tell me they wanted me to wear many hats, lead a team, talk directly with customers, respond to customer needs and build things I believe the customer wants/needs. When I actually started working it was months of doing very micro-managed pre-defined projects the founder/technical lead already had in the backlog. I brought up the discrepancy between the job I was promised and what the actual job was (straight execution in a feature factory that didn't even have decent text coverage!) and they told me they couldn't give me the responsibility they promised up front.
Now maybe you read that and think I hadn't earned the kind of responsibility I was asking for. But 1) I had it at other companies previously, bigger companies than the last job 2) again, it was the type of responsibility they teased in the hiring process. I ended up leaving after a few months for a role at a company that actually offered me a leadership role with autonomy.
