I will definitely give this update a try today!
After switching to Linux I had trouble replacing CaptureOne, mostly because of its simplicity. Pretty much every setting has a sensible default, and making the most important changes to a photo (exposure, sharpening, noise reduction, levels, etc) can be done without being exposed to any overly-complicated UI.
For awhile, I switched rapidly between Darktable and RawTherapee, not really satisfied with either. Even after doing my best to learn the ins and outs of each, I could still make my photos look much nicer in 10mins in CaptureOne than in 30mins in Darktable/RawTherapee.
I settled on RawTherapee over DarkTable last month. It's still the case that I can't get as good results in RawTherapee as I can in CaptureOne (not because RT is not powerful, but rather because there are SO many knobs/switches/etc and it's hard to find the ones that actually do what I want).
The moral of this rant is, I'm exited to try this new version of DT, and hopefully I can finally settle on a RAW editor that only shows me the knobs that matter to me by default without making me feel like I'm playing with a 747's control panel.
- decasteve 6y agoI still use an iMac for CaptureOne for post and printing but I've moved my DAM process to DigiKam [0]. I'm inclined to try RawTherapee and DarkTable again. Years ago I tried but they never worked as well as the proprietary alternatives. [0]: https://www.digikam.org/ https://www.digikam.org/
- jamesponddotco 6y agoI was a Lightroom Classic user before fully moving to Darktable, and now I get better results with Darktable. Not because it is easier to work with, but because the rendering engine for Fujifilm RAW files is miles ahead of whatever Adobe uses. Still miss my film simulations, though. They were great starting points when editing a big photo shoot. I should give RawTherapee a try. The UI with Darktable is definitely its biggest disadvantage.
- spaetzleesser 6y agoLightroom is known for being terrible with Fuji X-Trans files. Capture One is much better.
- jamesponddotco 6y agoStill not enough to beat Darktable, though. Plus, it does not work on Linux, which is what I use. While I did keep a Windows VM for Lightroom for a while when I switch back to Linux from macOS (and could do the same for Capture One), it is just not worth the hassle, and loss of privacy with Darktable being so good.
- spaetzleesser 6y agoHow long did it take you to get used to it? I am now so in tune with Capture One that I am very reluctant to change. It takes a long time to get a feel for this kind of software.
- jamesponddotco 6y agoA week or two, for about two hours a day. Making changes out of nowhere is something I am used to since I was a kid, so it might have been easier for me. But if you are happy with Capture One, and do not plan on switching your operating system anytime soon, I do not really see a reason. Darktable has a better rendering engine, but only pixel peepers will notice, and the fact it is open source only matters to a limited amount of people, myself included, but might not matter to you.
- Derbasti 6y agoThere are great free LUTs out there that can emulate the Fuji film simulations quite well. That might be worth a try.
- jamesponddotco 6y agoStuart Sowerby[1] released a few that I will try as soon as the pandemic is over, and I can go outside for photo shoots again. From the comparisons I saw, they look pretty damn close to the real thing. [1] https://blog.sowerby.me/fuji-film-simulation-profiles/ https://blog.sowerby.me/fuji-film-simulation-profiles/
- spaetzleesser 6y agoSame here. Capture One is the last thing that’s keeping me on the Mac. I have tried DarkTable and RawTherapee several times over the years but never got the same image quality out of them. Maybe it’s possible but the learning curve is very steep. Same with the Gimp. It seems very powerful but Affinity and Photoshop are much easier to use.

- andrei_says_ 6y agoI bought capture one and was never able to use it because I couldn’t figure out what it does with my image files... Lightroom is simple - everything is in one folder. Capture one creates some kind of magical folder system and I’m unable to find anything. What resource can help me understand its organization?
