Don't get sentimental just because you guys know each other for a long time. If the roles were reversed, would he accept the same conditions? I don't want to sound harsh, but when money is involved you should maximize negotiations for your own gain because you should assume everyone else is doing the same. Your friend maximized his and he didn't care about the relationship with you, just about his own gain.
