I'd guess that it is 'points/karma-based', on that your involvement/participation along with positive support from other participants increases your share on the executive power of your actions within the community. Is a bit like a shareholders meeting, only they give you shares if you actually say/support something and more shares for each other shareholder that expresses a positive reaction to your contribution. Free speech is practically total in terms of what you can say or write, but the community can demote your post in such a way that only people that has earned enough karma can read it. I guess that it only concerns itself with human rights related to expression.
- PaulHoule 6y agoIs this YCombinator as a business or "Hacker News" as the community of people who hang out at the water cooler they administrate? The wider community does not have a definite stance on any issue. It does not have an enforcement mechanism (e.g. majority rules) to decide this or that. I think anyone who wants to speak seriously about politics should watch this Princeton video course by Ian Shapiro https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2FD48CE33DFBEA7E https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2FD48CE33DFBEA7E So far as "free speech" there is also an aspect of privacy, "the right to be let alone." All humans are besieged directly and indirectly by spam, scam, cyber attacks, harassment and malicious communications. Arguments such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Arguments_for_the_Elimination_of_Television https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Arguments_for_the_Elimina... were dismissed by the Reagan era but have come back with Facebook. "Free speech" frequently get captured by people whose business model is to (a) get paid to give a talk, (b) stage a riot, (c) get notoriety, (d) repeat at a larger scale. A certain Greek kid conned college administrators for a while this way and earned a golden ticket to talk to CPAC, a conservative PAC. They thought the kid was great because liberals hated them. They watched the Youtube videos and they threw up. You don't hear about him any more. Back in the 1960s there was a "Free Speech Movement" on California campuses where students had been forbidden to table for the "Freedom Riders" that put their bodies on the line to protect blacks. They faced a shocking level of violence from the police and got reformed, however, the organization itself had fallen into the hands of people who advocated for the right to say words like "shit" that many Hacker Newsers have no problem with.
