Perhaps people are surprised sometimes by how amazing maintenance and reliability engineering in the field really is. A small example like having these machines use a medium which some of the younger crew haven't even heard of is a nice reminder of this. Sure maintaining backwards-compatibility has a cost, but so does constantly rewriting everything that already works.
