Well, it's nice that the author is considering the costs compared to the benefits drawn from doing something "just because". I don't think the article does a convincing job of arguing that releasing behind feature flags would be much easier to maintain than a staging deployment, though. For making this consideration, it'd be worth seeing why the costs can't be lowered, why the effectiveness of staging can't be increased, or what cases might be difficult to handle with feature flags.
