Why do humans prefer to mate in private?
- gowld 6y agoOne for the journal of obvious results. Animals that pair bond have jealousy as an evolutionary strategy. They need to know that their mate is carrying their genes. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pair_bond https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pair_bond
- JoeAltmaier 6y agoConfused. Didn't see anything in there about privacy. And how does that relate to pair bonding, as an 'obvious' result? I'm missing something.
- jollofricepeas 6y agoOP didn’t read the article so response makes no sense. There are many other animals besides humans with pair bonds that do not mate privately.
- techbio 6y agoSeems obvious enough: "he believes that the reason humans (and babblers) began looking for privacy during sex was because the male wanted to prevent other males from seeing his female partner in a state of arousal."
- bloak 6y agoAnd this is true specifically for humans and babblers because ...?
- MandieD 6y agoMost parrot species are very monogamous, many forming lifelong pair bonds, and even nest in enclosed hollows (the finding of which is often part of the courtship process), but mate in the open.
- stinkfist88 6y agoI didn’t care to read the article but intuitively while you are doing it wouldn’t that leave you vulnerable to predators and other potential enemies
- PeterStuer 6y ago"he believes that the reason humans (and babblers) began looking for privacy during sex was because the male wanted to prevent other males from seeing his female partner in a state of arousal." Yet human males also seem to prefer masturbating in private. Seems that one would need an additional explanation or maybe even potentially invalidate the given reasoning.
