One thing is bothering me is how browsers themselves are becoming ridiculously slow and complicated. I made a pure HTML and CSS site, and it still takes several seconds to load no matter how much I optimize it, after I launched some in-browser profiling tools, I saw that most of the time is spent with the browser building and rebuilding the DOM and whatnot several times, the download of all the data takes 0.2 seconds, all the rest of the time is the browser rendering stuff and tasks waiting each other to finish.
