- bzb3 6y agoThere are no alternatives, that's why people have to fight Windows.
- numpad0 6y agoClosing bugs.launchpad. net/ubuntu/+bug/1 was a mistake, now I understand.
- bzb3 6y agoIt was chest-thumping. Mark basically moved the goalposts so he could claim victory. The future he had originally envisioned will never come to fruition.
- tigrezno 6y agoWhat? There are no alternatives because people don't adopt the alternatives. If a mere 10% of the Microsoft user base moved to Linux you'd see lots of changes from comercial software vendors. But I suppose it's easier to pirate Windows and cry in online forums.
- t0astbread 6y agoThere are alternatives, you just have to accept that not every operating system is exactly like Windows and that it takes time to learn something new. But you can multi-boot while doing that and gradually move your workflow away from Windows. Maybe there's still something that actually doesn't work outside of Windows at the end but the majority of your life will probably be spent on an OS that you (hopefully) don't have to fight.
- Fauntleroy 6y agoIf you're using Windows for PC gaming, there are often no real alternatives. It's not always about workflows and compiling.
- Nacraile 6y agoThere are lots of games that run on linux these days. Personally, my wishlist has a deep enough backlog of linux-supporting games that there's very little risk I'll ever be "forced" to dip into the windows-only portion of the list. For those times when I really just want to play a specific game that's Windows-only, dual-boot works great. I couldn't care less if telemetry tells Microsoft I start my PC every few months to play a few games ;) I'm pretty skeptical that there are many real cases where eliminating Windows as a primary OS is a matter of "can't" and not "don't care enough to tolerate an occasional minor inconvenience". The latter case gets little sympathy when they complain about Microsoft's bad behavior.
- bzb3 6y agoPeople don't want to play whatever is on Linux, they want to play what they want to play.
- sergeykish 6y agoOut of curiosity I've installed Steam and checked featured game. Linux version has not started (not Ubuntu here) but Proton version worked. Now if Steam had productivity applications [1] and they had Proton version (not yet). - Shared404 6y agoPretty much every Steam game except multiplayer focused games works in Linux now. It's a high enough percentage that I don't really consider what OS it was built for before buying almost any game.

- mmm_grayons 6y agoAnd use what instead? I generally use linux on my desktop but have to reboot fairly often to do something windows-related. Libreoffice botches document formatting every time I use it on something above "hello, world." Lots of stuff still only works on windows, though wine compatibility is getting better.
- Snawoot 6y agoI use Windows inside Linux KVM virtual machine mostly for gaming. One of my GPUs passed through into VM with PCI passthrough.
- bavell 6y agoSame setup here. Best of both worlds IMO. Only drawback is to use the GPU on the linux host for e.g. Blender, I need to reboot (GPU can't rebind to PCIe root otherwise or something... thanks Nvidia)
- gruez 6y ago>GPU can't rebind to PCIe root otherwise or something... thanks Nvidia dose this only happen on nvidia, or amd as well?
- Snawoot 6y agoWhen I need to use GPU on Linux, I just start Linux guest VM and run what I need (some native Linux game or hashcat usually). It may seem little bit inconvenient, but I'm happy with such isolation: main system kernel runs not tainted, and Nvidia drivers not always stable - I've seen panics caused by nvidia kernel module.
- gjs278 6y agothat would happen with any pcie card, even non graphics ones
