- jahaja 6y agoHaving "affairs" doesn't make someone a creep, and certainly doesn't deserve even the slightest mention when assessing the man.
- NateEag 6y agoHow is whether he broke a solemn vow irrelevant to assessing him? Especially if it purportedly happened multiple times, and the religion he preached condemns that behavior so thoroughly?
- jahaja 6y agoBecause his "religious points"-score is unrelated to his universal message and the moral panic of it is thoroughly outdated.
- NateEag 6y agoThis is not about whether he agrees with me (or anyone else). It's about whether he practices what he preaches. No one is perfect, but it's unwise to trust people who consistently advise one behavior but do another themselves. Also, if he promised to be faithful to his wife, and then engaged in multiple affairs, he broke a big promise multiple times. Again, I'd say that's relevant in deciding how much he should be trusted.
- jahaja 6y ago> but it's unwise to trust people who consistently advise one behavior but do another themselves. Well, clergymen haven't been strangers to that kind of inconsistency throughout history. Luckily it's been relegated to gossip tabloids in modern society.
- NateEag 6y agoCertainly true. Not all have been guilty of it, though. I do not default to trusting pastors (despite being a devout Christian) - the United States is full to the brim of people who claim the title and act remarkably unlike Jesus Christ (a phenomenon predicted repeatedly in the first few decades of Christianity's establishment, I'll note).
- jahaja 6y ago> he United States is full to the brim of people who claim the title and act remarkably unlike Jesus Christ Yeah, indeed. Even though I see myself as both a socialist and atheist I have absolutely zero problem with religious people or religion in itself. To each their own. I actually admire the commitment and self-sacrifice of monks/nuns of various beliefs. What leaves me dumbfounded however is how so many people have somehow managed to cherry-pick all the worst aspects - egoism, intolerance, greed, no empathy beyond the in-group etc. - but still somehow argue that they're followers of a religion based on compassion for others (and especially the less fortunate?).
- NateEag 6y agoFWIW, if you believe the Gospel accounts, that's exactly what happened in Jesus' day. His interactions with the Sadducees and Pharisees are mostly him lambasting them for doing much what you describe. As he himself said, regarding eventual judgement: > Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+7%3A21-23&version=NIV https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+7%3A21-...
- steve76 6y agoLeadership murdered young is the worst possible outcome. The criminal who committed the murder did not set out to win a political argument. The world cornered a monster, and the monster took the path of most damage to make the world ugly. Monsters survive easier in an ugly world. If the monster murdered Ted Kennedy or Jesse Jackson instead, roles reverse. Today, in 2020, more people suffer under worst slavery than anytime in human history. If crimes centuries ago matter, what about the much more horrible crimes of today? Everything leaders do will be copied. Leaders attract monsters. The world works itself out better without forced leadership. Easiest way to force leadership? Push out all the people who ask for too much. Bring in people who can be bought for cheap. People do not work to make the world fair, or good, or even to have fun and a good time for all. People work to win, and do anything to win, because the top of the world comes down to coarse critical decisions. Stop the bleeding. Just come home. They die, you live. Good people have little power, still very much the underdog in the world. Look closely and see warning signs of monsters at the top of the food chain. The world, powerless to stop them. Monarchists want their colonies back. Marxists laugh at suffering, believing full well they will live forever or walk the Earth again after death. Both travel far to torture Americans to death. It's better to stay obscure and aloof. The world's evil hits you enough already if you do nothing. When it does, remind the world why it's wrong to wake sleeping monsters filled with a terrible resolve. I am building a telescope to focus into a black hole. Look at it the right way, everything out there says your heat is not escaping your body but instead going directly into your heart, cooking you alive. After I use cosmic observation to kill, I use it to poison the world against you. Everything that could ever existed, poxed and salted against your existence. I am not sure how to build heaven. I am convinced I built hell. Bother me again, we find out.
