Tesla’s approach to self driving is worse than others in the short term, but I think its the only strategy that can scale. Waymo and GM are both relying on detailed 3D maps which can’t possibly scale past small rural areas. If we are ever going to have level 5 autonomy available everywhere its going to be with a solution very similar to what Tesla is building.
