How should a deaf programmer conduct phone screens?
- BossingAround 6y agoQuite loudly..?
- _nalply 6y agoIs this helpful?
- BossingAround 6y agoWas that a serious question? Because in my culture, we say that silly questions should be paired with silly answer. If you're serious, I'd assume there's a variety of tech to get over this problem, e.g. something like a Zoom call. A "phone screen" doesn't have to necessarily involve a phone.

- BossingAround 6y agoSo I've never done a "phone screen" because that's typically the job of an HR person (just to check whether the candidate is going to waste my time or not, be it because of immediate red flags, low skill level, or whatever else), but I think if the candidate is applying for any medium-sized and bigger company, the companies are typically be very accommodating towards these issues. I don't have any disabilities (well, none that you can see) so I don't know if that's what it feels like to a person with special needs, but I feel like at my company (medium to big sized US-based corp), interviewers are very accommodating. Personally, I wouldn't worry about not getting a call back because of some disability. That said, again, I don't have any special needs, so there might be a lot of factors I can't see. From my perspective as a tech interviewer, as long as I can communicate with the candidate in a meaningful way, I personally wouldn't care about any special needs. I would, obviously, make sure that the person would get proper equipment (i.e. special monitor, keyboard, screen reader, anything they might need) if they were hired of course, but it wouldn't influence my hiring decision.
- _nalply 6y agoThanks, that's insightful. This means the phone screen is not a problem per se. However, would you propose to hire a good Deaf programmer for remote work if he only communicates by written chat or email?
