To play devil's advocate for a moment, would the Holywood Blacklist in the 50's count as Holywood studios denying a platform to writers associated with an ideology they believed to be dangerous?

- unity1001 6y agoIt was not a belief - the existing establishment in US did know that left wing movements were dangerous to itself - just like how aristocracy saw that Enlightenment ideas and the subsequent revolution were dangerous to themselves during 18th century France. That would have been just censorship if they attempted to repress the opposition in such cases. The situation of legitimate exclusion of certain things from freedom of speech follows not such specific self-interest, but fundamental principles which made human civilization come to where it is today. They are mostly enshrined in Human Rights Declaration. It is the most legitimate and simple document of principles which mankind was able to conceive, and it remains the basis of our modern civilization. Pull its principles out from the society, you will be amazed how fast youll end up with a nuclear war with no aftermath for a sane civilization.
