What has helped me is a well filled task list. I use pivotal tracker more or less as a task list and for some scope control, even though I work alone. I guess every form of task list will do the job, however. The important thing is that there is some sort of backlog. That serves two purposes: I feel more motivated to get started when I see all the work which needs to get done as concrete steps. And I can pick a simple or complex task whichever fits my work mode best at the time.
