According to Karl Marx, who had a reason to believe that; it backed up his ideology.
Hobbes thought that man in the state of nature had a life that was "continual fear, and danger of violent death; and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short".
Watching nature documentaries about the lives of lions (and other critters) have me leaning towards the latter.

"Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns—the ones we don't know we don't know. And if one looks throughout the history of our country and other free countries, it is the latter category that tend to be the difficult ones."[2] [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_German_Ideology https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_German_Ideology [2] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/There_are_known_knowns https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/There_are_known_knowns
