I've also heard of a lot of employers that are pushing the 20% policy for their software engineers or providing some other time allocated towards upskilling. My employer requires us to do one hour of training per day. We are allowed to study whatever we want or work on personal projects. I personally don't think it's weird for an engineer to keep up with emerging tech and trends. I'm sure a lot of engineers outside of software do this.
