Is a sponsored PhD like an industrial PhD?

  Sorry, lacking sleep and wasn't clear! I didn't mean an industry-sponsored PhD - I meant a fully funded PhD, e.g.: These add a non-repayable, tax-free maintenance grant known as a 'stipend'.
