why should basic government services be profitable?
- exabrial 6y agowhy should basic government services severely damage the environment?
- toiletfuneral 6y agois that the USPS or just the free market?
- sudosysgen 6y agoThen propose a plan for how to make USPS green while maintaining efficiency, and we can have a vote on it.
- DevKoala 6y agoLike the parent mentioned, the service is exploited by companies to do their cheap spam advertising. Is it okay for taxes to cover this?
- ceejayoz 6y agoSo, get rid of the “you have to make a profit” requirement, fund it via taxes, and charge the spammers normal rates.
- DevKoala 6y agoHow do you know it is spam?
- ceejayoz 6y agoIt’s not worth spending 55 cents to mail it?
- DevKoala 6y ago> Marketing mail volume for 2019 was 75 Billion https://facts.usps.com/table-facts/ https://facts.usps.com/table-facts/ At a subsidy of 10 cents per envelope shipped, the US government is funding a $7.5 Billion / year worth of marketing operations for private companies and scammers of all sorts. Also, according to those stats less than 10% of the mail throughput is used for the benefit of the citizens. Where you informed on this before engaging?
- mthoms 6y agoDo you have a citation for the assertion that this portion of their business is not profitable and being "exploited"? I'm genuinely curious.

- mthoms 6y agoCome on. I've seen these numbers, they say nothing about profitability. Your assertion was about profitability, not volume. Edit: I see in your other comment you claim a 10% subsidy on marketing mail but I see this no-where in the source you provided.
