Ask HN: Any major manufacturer make office AMD machines?
I am struggling to find OEM AMD machines, I am only finding ones built by small companies that bought parts off the shelf (or by individuals).
I want to replace an aging Xeon machine we have (we bought it used in first place) with a new AMD machine, but not finding any major manufacturer (that we can trust they will have professional support) that sells AMD Machines.
Dell for example have AMD Machines but only geared toward cloud and HPC, being rack-based omputers or "normal" computers (ie: not a microcomputer, but not big as a mainframe).
I wanted just a tower atx microcomputer with AMD but not finding any, except for "gamer" machines full of neon and other distracting things that would get in the way of the machine being an office server and "hand me down office desktop" in some years.
- itg 6y agoLenovo has ThinkCentre/ThinkStation desktops available with AMD Ryzen CPUs.
- codevark 6y agoDell had the Optiplex 5055 for a while - I managed to get three of them before they were mysteriously discontinued. I suspect they will at some point have something like the 5055, but with the newer Ryzen APUs. My main desktop at home is a 5055 SFF with an 8c/16t Ryzen 7 PRO 1700 with 64GB RAM, 256GB NVMe + 1TB SATA SSD, and a Radeon RX550. Very capable machine. The ones I have at work are similar but have the Ryzen 5 PRO 2400G APU. Goog "The AMD Store at Dell". It's a whole subsite of dell.com that most of their salespeople don't even know about. However, the only desktops that are showing up atm are the Alienware game boxes. But.. check out Dell's outlet site for refurbed and overstocked stuff - You can get an Opti 5055 with the 2400G and a 3-year warranty for $550.)

Dell made the Optiplex 5055 for about a year; I managed to grab three before they were mysteriously discontinued. Nice machines. I expect them to resurrect something like the 5055 but with the newer Renoir APUs, maybe by year's end.
