I have the feeling that the introductory story about Zoom and Webex wasn't quite like that. I think I remember some HN comments detailing it. For one thing you can't "just" create a replacement; you need employees, capital etc. So it was much more likely a game of politics rather than one of innovation. A more useful example would be one involving engineers, not a senior tech exec.
