It's not a hack when an employee holds the door open and gives use of an admin management tool to a third party.
Likewise, it's not a bitcoin scam when bitcoin is the method of transfer, just like it's not a US-dollar scam every other time dollars are used in theft.
- barbecue_sauce 6y agoIs bribery not considered a viable form of social engineering?
- ceo_tim_crook 6y agoI wouldn't even call that social engineering, just fraud
- c00ls0sa 6y agoWhere was that mentioned? This wasn't a hack. A "life hack" maybe.
- bpfrh 6y agoI would argue that it is not. Social engineering is when your target is unaware that what he does is wrong or will do damage.
- paxys 6y agoNo, the term (as used in the context of information security) implies deceiving/manipulating people.
- kingnight 6y agoBitcoin is sort of notable vs US-dollar in that it’s significantly more of a novelty, and unlike the dollar, doesn’t have same fraud recovery path.
- gruez 6y ago>unlike the dollar, doesn’t have same fraud recovery path. You mean electronic us dollars? I doubt you'd be able to recover physical us dollars if they were scammed.
- kingnight 6y agoYep, good point. But if someone stole this amount in cash through a hack or social engineering, I think that would be even more notable :)
- Latty 6y agoI think there is an argument for it being a hack in the sense that a secure system should try and limit internal abuse too.
- syshum 6y agoWe have devalued the term hacking to the point were just opening cmd on windows is "hacking" now
- paxys 6y agoFunny because that's exactly what the original definition of the term is, before it started being used purely for infosec.
- TeMPOraL 6y agoThat's not us, that's tech support scammers. Opening a CMD and executing an "echo YOU HAVE VIRUSES", or repeatedly executing TREE command, are used in practice to bait people into paying for "malware removal" and "anti-hacker protection".
- dilandau 6y agoQuit being a pedant and sliding valuable comments with this bullshit.
- sp332 6y agoIt's not real hacking unless it's chopping with an ax. I think simple account takeovers started being called "hacks" jokingly on Facebook, when a friend would find your phone or computer unlocked and logged in.
- baddox 6y agoTo use your analogy, it literally is still burglary when an employee holds the door open to the office for you to enter and steal things. The attackers took over accounts by technical means. This is a perfectly reasonable usage of “hack.”
