  I think if you care for your project and take pride for the result it is going to be difficult to separate both (not impossible, just extremely difficult). I personally find it very difficult to accept outside direction to meddle in the project if I see it is clearly unwarranted, meddlesome and damaging to the project. If I feel responsibility for the wellbeing of the project I also feel responsibility to act on such damaging attempts and it is difficult to act with conviction if you feel dispassionate.
