I had a very similar experience with Toptal and going down the wrong avenue when solving the problem. The interviewer muted themself and went non-responsive while I was working on the problem. So I was asking questions and heard nothing back at all until the time was coming to an end. At that point the interviewer came back to assess what I had done. I remember it being a really terrible experience
