Please don't use Hacker News for political or ideological battle. That destroys the curiosity this site exists for. "
- throwaway0a5e 6y agoA comment telling us that this type of murder is more common in the culture where the victim comes from than the culture local to where he was murdered without passing value judgement hardly seems like flame bait to me.
- jedimind 6y ago"the culture where the victim comes" - The article didn't mention a single word about bangladesh, so why bring it up? By the way, even that information is totally false, he NEVER lived in bangladesh, so he doesn't even come from that culture. It clearly says that he was a New York tech entrepreneur.
- kinghajj 6y agoHis family is Bangladeshi, and his startup was founded in Bangladesh. https://nypost.com/2020/07/15/who-was-fahim-saleh-the-tech-ceo-brutally-dismembered-in-nyc/ https://nypost.com/2020/07/15/who-was-fahim-saleh-the-tech-c...
- jedimind 6y agoHe was still not born in Bangladesh nor did he live there, but he lived and grew up in America. This article didn't mention a single word of Bangladesh, it was still mentioned by the root comment merely for ideological purposes.
- kinghajj 6y ago> He was still not born in Bangladesh nor did he live there Sure, and all OP wrote is > (his original country) Though it's not 100% correct, it's easy to see how someone's family coming from there would be summarized as their "original country." > it was still mentioned by the root comment merely for ideological purposes. What ideology? All the OP pointed out was that this person had strong ties to Bangladesh, both in heritage in business, and that extremists from that country use the same technique for murder as this man suffered. That seems clearly like relevant context.
- aptidude187 6y ago> All the OP pointed out was that this person had strong ties to Bangladesh, both in heritage in business, No he didn't, can you quote that part for us please?
- throwaway0a5e 6y ago>The article didn't mention a single word about bangladesh, so why bring it up? Because if he (had) come from there it's possible someone from there was the one who killed him (or had him killed and got to choose how) hence making the dismemberment make more sense since it's an odd thing to see in a random murder. >By the way, even that information is totally false, he NEVER lived in bangladesh, so he doesn't even come from that culture. It clearly says that he was a New York tech entrepreneur. Ok then, my bad. The greater point still stands.
- jedimind 6y agoNo the 'greater point' does not stand, this has achieved nothing and did not contribute to anything except a toxic political blame game for ideological purposes, which violates the rules of ycombinator.
- ordinaryradical 6y agoYou need to learn where these rules apply, not just how to quote them. OP introduced context for the murder. It may not be particularly relevant or it may be spot on, but it's hardly introducing flamebait or ideology into the conversation.
- jedimind 6y agoPlease who are you kidding? The rule "Please don't use Hacker News for political or ideological battle. That destroys the curiosity this site exists for." is perfectly applying here. It's not introducing context but trying to stir a toxic political blame game. By the way, as I have written above, even that information is totally false, he NEVER lived in bangladesh, so he doesn't even come from that culture, nor was it ever written in the article, so why bring that up except for ideological reasons?
- TomVDB 6y ago> Please don't use Hacker News for political or ideological battle You keep on repeating that OPs comment was political or ideological, yet OP didn't mention politics nor religion nor ideology. They simply stated that Bangladesh has issues with extremists using these kind of tactics. They didn't say what kind of extremists, and since I don't know a whole lot about Bangladesh, I frankly don't have a clue. You're more than welcome to point that Bangladesh doesn't have these kind of issues, or that the victim wasn't much related to Bangladesh. That's an interesting counterpoint, much more so than seeing things that aren't there.
- jedimind 6y ago> yet OP didn't mention politics > They simply stated that Bangladesh has issues How is this not politics? The article is about a young tech entrepreneur from New York, the article also hasn't mentioned bangladesh once. This is just getting laughable at this point.
