Surprised at the push back in here. Telling people they should consider getting a trade skill rather than a 4 year college degree that is semi-useless isn't that controversial on HN typically. Could it be because it's coming from the current administration and everything they do is 'bad' ?
- pmiller2 6y agoIt's because people who were forced out of work by COVID-19 need to support themselves right now, not go back to school. It's not because "orange man bad."
- MengerSponge 6y agoThe pushback is because the message is asinine. It implies that people lost their jobs because of a skills deficit, not because there's a mismanaged pandemic ravaging large swaths of the country. After nearly four years of nepotism, greed, and incompetence, it's reasonable to assume that what the current administration is doing is bad. Not to say everything they will ever do is bad, just that assuming a mixture of malice and incompetence is a reasonable heuristic.
- Barrin92 6y agowhen people are saying things like expanding trade skills most people mean in that in an abstract sense, as in, let's teach more young people skills they need to succeed in the labour market. Not let's tell 18 million people who might be struggling to put food on the table right now to go fuck themselves and magically learn a four year trade
