Politicians and journalists alike use it to gain influence. Which would be fine in and of itself. But they absolutely do pay too much attention to it. My problem is how many of them then mistake the screaming extremists in the comment threads on there for "public opinion" and the rest of us have to suffer this nonsense - until there's a vote on something that doesn't go anything like the way they thought it would, time and time again (there have been several examples in the UK in recent years).
