It's not "much work" but it is a lot of extra risk, because after you empty someone's credit card they'll quickly find out and alert the bank, which will alert the authorities, while skimming can go undetected much easier.
- epanchin 6y agoIn the UK, banks don’t alert the authorities.
- pc86 6y agoWhy not?
- martinald 6y agoThere is so much fraud the police can't keep up. Customers are told to contact 'Action Fraud', which is staffed by people on minimum wage and undercover filming shows them basically laughing at victims as they type up another pointless report that goes into the bin. If you're the police and you have the option of spending resources on burglary or muggings (which cost an absolute fortune in police time, generally low value, but in the public's eye very important) or payment fraud, the police will put time into "in person" crime every time.
- ryanlol 6y agoSame goes for the skimmer, bank will see all the cards used in location x being emptied. It’s really not a lot of extra risk, it’s not like the authorities could respond at the ATM in a timely manner. All the thief needs to do is cover their face.
- SCHiM 6y agoThat is after you've downloaded the data. Skimmers these days can be read out remotely. You don't need to do anything obvious. You don't need to come back to the atm once you've got what you came for.
