Does single thread CPU matter? It's been facing marginal returns for years. Most of the growth in computing power expansion is in chiplets, GPUs, and TPUs.
The real question is mobile GPUs, and whether NVidia or AMD want to step into that market. On the desktop, Ampere and RDNA2 absolutely crush Apple's offerings, Apple is multiple generations behind. However this is at the expense of not really carrying too much about TDP. The real question is can NV or AMD squeeze a cut down version of their architectures into a SoC thats power competitive.
That is, I might be willing to buy an AMD "Fusion" that has a Ryzen and RDNA2 architecture in it, even if it is a severely cut down version, over a MacBook if the battery life is reasonable.
