>The US already lost the DRAM industry, the disk industry, the display panel industry, most of the small component industry, and the consumer electronics industry. In ten years, the US won't be able to make electronics in volume.
Welcome to Europe, I guess.
- Gangbusters 6y agoThe USA will increasingly morph into an economy dedicated to providing goods and services for those receiving Government welfare: the aged and under-employed. Europe is ahead of the curve on aging and devotes a huge amount of welfare to its non-European population. By contrast Taiwan is ethnically homogenous and can 'afford' to have very low tax rates: https://shieldgeo.com/payroll-and-tax-in-taiwan/ https://shieldgeo.com/payroll-and-tax-in-taiwan/ eg. 5% VAT vs 20% in Europe, 3% combined payroll tax vs 40% in Europe.
- flamble 6y agoThis is a fascinating glimpse into far-right ideology, and I'm really curious about this idea that welfare expense increases in proportion to ethnic heterogeneity. Where does it come from, or rather, how do people try to justify it?
- Gangbusters 6y agoIt comes from reality: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00148-017-0636-1 https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00148-017-0636-1 "We present life cycle estimates of the potential fiscal impact of immigration considering the cost of immigration on the margin as well as on average. The main conclusion is that immigrants from Western countries have a positive fiscal impact, while immigrants from non-Western countries have a large negative one, which is also the case when considering only non-refugee immigrants. The negative effect is caused by both a weak labour market performance and early retirement in combination with the universal Danish welfare schemes." This is why more sensible European countries (like Denmark) have begun aggressive assimilation schemes, and steps to reduce immigration.

- square_usual 6y agoThere is nothing in that paper that suggests that is due to ethnic heterogeneity.
- Gangbusters 6y ago"immigrants from Western countries have a positive fiscal impact, while immigrants from non-Western countries have a large negative one" how much clearer can it get than that, considering Denmark is a European country?
