I interned at IBM my 4th year of college. I was hired directly by the team I was working for but still had to submit an application through their external hiring board. Took 5 tries with my new manager filling it out for me because even he didn't know the requirements. This was an internship that assumed the applicants were in college but still required 4+ years in java and c++ - neither of which I touched the entire time I was there.
