The Haymarket Massacre happened 30 years prior to Ford introducing the 8 hour workday in his plants. Furthermore, there had been labor agitation resulting in 8-hour days in other parts of the country decades before Ford did so.
- cheesecracker 6y agoThanks for the information. Nevertheless the claim that only Unions can reduce work hours is simply false. People can negotiate their contracts. Many people work less than 40 hour work weeks.

- macintux 6y ago> People can negotiate their contracts. I’d wager that’s true for perhaps 10-20% of the workforce at best.
- bserge 6y agoYou're very optimistic :)
- cheesecracker 6y agoAnd why would you say that is the case? Bad personal finance skills (high mortgage, student debt...)? How many people even try to negotiate their work hours? I'd believe you if you claimed less than 10% even think about it, the others just accept their lot as the norm.
