Something like this was my first programming project when I was 12...
I had built a web service where you could get a unique URL for a .jpg and use it as your signature in forums. On the other end you had a Winamp plugin that you had to install that updated the currently playing song. The php file that served the jpg just used imagemagick to build the image. So you could display what song you were listening or what the last song you were listening to was to everyone in the forum. You could pick your theme as well for the image. No signup required.
Man this brings back memories... and also makes me feel bad that after all these years and a college degree I was probably smarter, faster and more productive as a 12 year old.
This was just hosting a php +MySQL db on a free cpanel host (I think 110mb.com) and none of that isomorphic lambda react firebase vercel kubernetes jazz and it still worked beautifully.
- kohtatsu 6y agoNice! Mine was similar, for a browser game called Tribal Wars. Same stack; I (ab)used the referrer header to determine who was requesting the image (from a village ID in the header). I'd embed it in tribe forum posts to mark people as read, display dynamic stats for points, tribes, villages and such. Sometimes I'd do shenanigans like "[current person] is a noob". It really threw people in a loop as nobody had developed anything similar ;)
