Depends on the embedded ecosystem. STM has tons of free software packages for their products that remove the need to write drivers and a variety of algorithms from scratch.
Albeit not the same, Xilinx and Altera have a plethora of FPGA IP that can be licensed/bought, although I can see the merit in a custom implementation here to save money.
