I remember here (in Bulgaria) 10 years ago storekeepers and taxi drivers wouldn't even say hello or goodbye or thank you. In fact if there was any communication it would be probably be rude. Now, everyone says hello, thanks even smiles sometimes. It is much more pleasant and appears natural. And I guess people have learned that manners sell.
